The self-treatment guide is designed to take people through the education, self-discovery and symptom recognition process critical to self-treatment and management of one’s low back pain.

Does that sound complicated? It doesn’t have to be. Self-assessment and treatment is a skill, and with proper tools and practice, the skill and be taught and learned. Now pain can be predicted, prevented and management cane be perfected!

More About The Book

I created The Rehab Cookbook: Low back Edition, to help provide a framework of how to identify the causes of pain, solutions to pain, and simple steps to resume normal everyday life. This particular guide is focused on low back care.

This guide is not designed to diagnose any dysfunction and legally I must tell you, you should be consulting your medical professional prior to beginning any program concerning your health. Likewise, if you begin self-treatment and your symptoms do not resolve, you should consult your physician.

If you are having new or long-standing pain, we hope that this guide can help change your life. Pain effects everyone in different capacities and it is very personal and unique. It may affect your job, your finances, or even limit your hobbies. Pain is personal! Pain alters our mood and can change our personalities, creating conflict with our personal relationships. However, pain effects your life, this guide will provide you a framework to navigate your pain and return to your everyday activities pain free.

For the first time, I am providing a step-by-step guide dedicated and focused on providing the tools necessary for an individual to treat their own pain! Now, with the DIY Therapy Treatment Guide you will be able to identify all the components contributing to your back pain and find simple treatment solutions to help manage it.

I created the back pain guide for several reasons with one primary goal in mind – I wanted to help others relieve themselves of their pain, and or manage it much more effectively. This book will help you manage your pain or can be used in conjunction with formal treatment with your health care provider. DIY Therapy focuses on several themes that are invaluable to treatment. Below are the main themes:

Bridge the Knowledge Gap Between Clinician and Patient

Knowledge is empowering. It allows individuals to have a better understanding of their surroundings. Understanding of one’s pain allows for better compliance and performance of the necessary exercise recommended. This requires us to have a basic understanding of how our pain is created, basic anatomy and physiology. Understanding how, why and what is irritated allows us to fully engaged in the treatment process.

Perspective Change

Our beliefs and attitudes surrounding our pain shape our thoughts and actions. Unhealthy beliefs decrease the chance to improve our pain. We must identify unhealth thoughts and beliefs that are self-limiting and remove them to increase our potential.

Process Versus Diagnosis

Diagnostic treatment is limiting. It may give us insight into what the problem is but it tells us nothing about why the problem came about and more importantly how to manage it. A process treatment approach allows us to demonstrate patterns, that helps us become us predict pain, and eventually prevent pain.

Do It Yourself

Our self-treatment series is designed to allow individuals to self-treat and self-assess their pain. Through a tried and tested process, pain management can be easy. Unfortunately, pain relief can be challenging and frustrating and is only truly achieved through consistency. It also requires learning a new skill which can be intimidating for some.
Patients many times present to my clinic with almost no self-treatment skills at all. They have no idea how to manage their pain. They struggle when I initially introduce the steps of self-treatment, and at first it is difficult and challenging for the them. After time and consistency, the patient learns the skills necessary for self-treatment. Just like any skill, people need practice. With consistency and repetition, they develop a better understanding the skills and practices necessary for pain management. From that point forward, they are forever able to manage their pain. There is nothing more satisfying as a clinician than to create a self-efficient patient. To empower a patient and create a sense of self-efficacy or self-sufficiency is my number one goal.
Through my clinical practice, I have been empowering patients for years. Now with this guide we hope to reach thousands, if not millions, of individuals suffering from long standing pain. Our goal is to reach 1 million downloads of this guide and impact as may lives as we can.

Below is an introduction to the basic steps needed to assess and successfully manage your pain.

Education: Knowledge is power! Proper education and knowledge are important to understanding, evaluating, and treating low back pain. This portion of the guide ensures that you are well prepared.

Activity Identification: Activity identification consist of everything involved in and with our pain. In other words, what contributes to our pain. Activities and or things that may be included are you, your hobbies, your work, habits, daily responsibility, sleep quality, rest, current exercises, etc. Identifying the variables that effect your pain are critical to healing. Our guide provides general and specific examples of how our daily movements and activities effect our pains and problems. The cookbook allows us to systematically rank and prioritize the importance our daily activities have on our pain.

Assessment: This step examines which healing phase we are in and helps us understand which exercises we should begin to implement. Our guide offers exercises to help reduce pain, promote pain free movement, and build strength and aids in planning the duration and frequency of said exercises. In addition, it provides strategies to perform these activities in a systematic way so that one can progress.

Treatment Trials: The proper type of exercise and amount (dosage) of exercises is critical to manage our pain. The challenge for pain management is that everyone is different and unique. This phase helps to determine which exercises to perform, the right amount of exercise, and how much rest is needed to help provide you with the correct healing conditions. Many times, this is a trial and error process, more art than science. Our guide will teach you how to identify and prioritize different sensations and pains.

Execution: This is the execution step. Once we identify the right mixture of activities. It is time to execute. As we execute daily, we become more efficient and we develop more tolerance to activities. Consistency day after day decreases overall sensitivity to activity and allows pain to be relieved.
