Standing Flexion

This exercise is appropriate for individuals with Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD), Stenosis, severe arthritic changes, spondylolisthesis and very late stages of muscle strain. See the specifics in the tabs below.

Patients should perform this exercise if they have pain in standing and get relief in sitting and can sit for as long as they like without increase pain.

1. Adjust belt tension for desired intensity level
2. Stand with feet shoulder width apart and hands on hips
3. Slowly lean backward arching back

How it works: Once the muscle has calmed down, flexing the spine forward will gently stretch the strained muscle and improve overall function.

REPS: 2-4 reps for 15-30 seconds every 1-5 hours

Typical Symptom Response:

  • Positive:  Relaxation of muscles, possible increase pain or pressure in the center of the spine.  If any pain is perceived in the leg, the pain will move up the leg and towards the low back
  • Negative: Area of pain becomes larger in diameter or moves into the buttocks or leg

How it works: Bending forward draws the spine into flexion relieving pressure on the affected area of the spine

REPS: 10 reps every 1-3 hours or when pain increases
