How it works: The sciatic nerve is often affected by the piriformis muscle located in the buttocks.  Gentle stretching can release the muscle allowing for less irritation of the sciatic nerve.

REPS: 2-4 for 15-30 seconds every 1-5 hours

Typical Symptom Response:

  • Positive:  Relaxation of muscles, decrease buttocks pain or nerve pain into the lower extremity.  If any pain is perceived in the leg, the pain will move up the leg and towards the low back.
  • Negative: Area of pain becomes larger in diameter or increases into the buttocks or moves further down the leg

How it works: Stenosis and DDD may cause an irritation of the sciatic nerve.  The sciatic nerve runs under or through the piriformis muscle.  When the sciatic nerve is irritated is may cause the piriformis muscle to spasm resulting in further irritation of the nerve.  Gentle stretching can release the muscle allowing for less irritation of the sciatic nerve.
